An entry point into one of Manuel Lobo's most ambitious projects - the Vinha do Norte, a north facing single vineyard in the Douro planted in 1985. MATRIZ is rooted in the same old schist soils as its flagship sibling, drawing on the same trio of classic Douro varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz. Grapes are hand selected in the vineyard and transported in 20 kg boxes before a second rigorous sorting at the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 10 days of extended skin contact for depth and structure. The wine is then aged in 225-litre French oak barrels, with only the finest barrels selected for the final blend. Deep violet, almost opaque. The nose is expressive and layered - wild Douro berries, cistus, balsamic herbs, and warm spice in seamless harmony. On the palate, exuberant and powerful yet refined, with compact, fresh textured tannins and a finish that is long, complex, and unmistakably Douro. A wine full of identity. Perfect alongside roasted meats, game, and aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Vineyards planted 1985.
